ChatGPT Is Merging Chat And Work Into One Experience

ChatGPT is about to lose one of its most important buttons.

OpenAI is preparing to merge Chat and Work into a single experience, allowing users to move from discussing an idea to asking ChatGPT to actually carry it out without switching modes. The change will first roll out to a limited group of users before expanding more broadly.

That sounds like interface cleanup.

It is really a change in what a ChatGPT conversation is supposed to become.

The Conversation Becomes The Workspace

Today, Chat and Work still have different jobs. Chat is where you ask questions, brainstorm and think through problems. Work is the agentic layer built for longer tasks: researching, working across files and plugins, creating presentations, building websites or taking actions on the web.

OpenAI now wants those behaviors to live together.

You might start by asking ChatGPT to explore an idea, upload a few files, refine the strategy, then tell it to create the deck or carry out a web task — all inside the same conversation while you review and redirect the work.

There is no explicit moment where you stop talking to AI and start delegating to AI.

That boundary simply disappears.

ChatGPT Is Becoming Less Like A Chatbot

This fits a much bigger shift happening across ChatGPT.

Intelligent UI already lets the interface change depending on the task. Dots can keep working across assignments. Plugins connect ChatGPT to external services. Work gives the system access to files, apps and a browser so it can act rather than simply answer.

Merging Chat and Work makes those capabilities feel less like separate products and more like different behaviors of the same assistant.

Codex will remain separate for now, but even there the walls are getting thinner. Beginning in December, Plus, Pro and Business users will share one usage allowance across ChatGPT and Codex as OpenAI brings more of Work’s agentic capabilities into the main ChatGPT experience.

The important shift is behavioral.

For years, the default AI interaction has been: ask, receive, copy, do.

OpenAI wants it to become: ask, discuss, delegate, approve.

The chat box is not going away.

It is becoming the place where the work starts, and increasingly, where the work gets finished.
