ChatGPT has spent most of its life looking like a chat box. OpenAI now wants the interface itself to change depending on what you ask.
Launching alongside GPT-6, Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT combine text with interactive charts, maps, diagrams, buttons, forms and even purpose-built tools directly inside a conversation. Ask about retirement savings and it can create a calculator. Plan a road trip and it can build a map. Ask how an airplane wing works and the answer can become an interactive visual explanation.
Not Every Answer Should Be A Paragraph
OpenAI’s premise is straightforward: the best response to a question is not always text.
GPT-6 has been trained to decide which format fits the task, from a simple written response to a side-by-side comparison, interactive diagram or tool users can manipulate themselves. OpenAI says the interface is generated progressively as the model answers, rather than appearing only after the entire response is complete.
The company demonstrated examples ranging from recipes and bicycle mechanics to hiking plans and savings calculators. Users who prefer simpler responses will also be able to reduce how frequently ChatGPT uses visual elements.
AI Is Starting To Generate Software On Demand
The bigger shift is what happens when the interface stops being fixed.
Traditional software asks us to learn where the buttons are, which menu contains the feature we need and which application is best suited to the task. Intelligent UI reverses some of that logic: explain what you want to accomplish and the software can create an interface around the task.
OpenAI describes the goal as moving toward software that adapts to people rather than requiring people to adapt to software. That could mean increasingly temporary interfaces: a calculator you need once, a comparison tool built around one purchase, or an interactive explanation generated specifically for one question.
It also fits a broader pattern inside ChatGPT. Shopping now includes virtual try-on. Dots are designed to act continuously on a user’s behalf. And ChatGPT increasingly connects answers to actions rather than stopping at information.
The Chat Box May Have Been The Training Wheels
Conversational AI made powerful software accessible because anyone could simply type what they wanted.
But conversation does not have to remain the final interface.
If AI can understand the task, choose the right information and then generate the best way to interact with it, the chat box becomes less of a destination and more of a starting point.
For years, we learned how to use software.
Now software is starting to learn how to present itself to us.
