Many brands think of Facebook or Twitter first, when it comes to the percentage of users that follow brands on social media. Yet, according to a recent GWI Chart of the Day, Instagram beats all other social networks when it comes to fans following brands or researching them.

There are currently 400 million active users on Instagram and according to GWI, 53% of them are following their favourite brands on the platform. Second on the list is Twitter, with 50% of its users following brands, but the big surprise is that just 44% of Facebook users follow brands on the platform.

In terms of people using the various social networks to research brands and their products, apparently the trend is pretty similar… The top social network for brand research is also Instagram, and Facebook is again in last place. 44% of Instagram users research brands and/or their products, versus only 36% on Facebook. Again, Twitter comes in second place at 39%, which it shares with other networks like Tumblr and YouTube.
So, what does this data tell us? Well,that Instagram is more powerful than one would have thought, at least with regards to brand presence. Next time you think about preferring Facebook for your brand’s social presence, think once more about Instagram, and how you can use it effectively to capture the hearts and minds of your followers.
