Twitter is testing a new feature that lets users record, and send, voice messages in their DMs.
After introducing audio tweets last year, and Spaces more recently, Twitter is continuing down the audio path, with a new test in three regions. Earlier this week, the micro-blogging platform announced the ability to record and send voice messages in DMs.

The feature isn’t something new to the market, as most other messaging apps allow users to send each other audio messages. However, it’s a brand new way to communicate on Twitter, which has historically been all about short text. Instead of using 140 characters, users now use 140 seconds of audio.

Spaces is a way to counter Clubhouse’s meteoric rise, while Twitter voice messages in DMs complete the app’s audio lineup – for now.
The feature is now being tested in India, Brazil, and Japan for the time being. If you have access to it, you’ll find a purple spectrogram icon in your DMs, instead of the send message button. You can replay your recorded message before sending it.
You can react to voice messages with emojis, just like you can do with ordinary DMs.
