Twitter Brings Politwoops Back To Life Ahead Of Elections

2016 is the year for elections in many countries, with the US presidential race being arguably the most interesting one. During these times, politicians and their social media posts are in the spotlight, and they create conversations. For this reason, Twitter has decided to revive the Politwoops service, which sheds light on politicians’ deleted and controversial tweets.

Politwoops, founded by the Open State Foundation organisation, brought into the spotlight deleted tweets from personalities in politics. As expected, it caused much friction between the platform and politicians. In a swift response to the controversies that were caused, Twitter decided to close the API end points that the platform used to retrieve the deleted tweets, causing the project to shut down completely.

Now, after several months of radio silence, Twitter and the Open State Foundation have finally reached an agreement that permits Politwoops to be up and running again. A product of a hackathon, the project had been live since 2010, in more than 30 countries.

This move is in line with Twitter CEO, Jack Dorsey’s promise to encourage transparency in organisations. As the announcement reads:
We need to make sure we are serving all these organizations and developers in the best way, because that is what will make Twitter great. We need to listen, we need to learn, and we need to have this conversation with you. We want to start that today.
