For the first time in over two years, Reddit is rolling out a new surface on iOS/Android, called Discover Tab.
Reddit has announced Discover Tab, a new, straightforward, and media-first surface that helps users find a wide variety of content and communities in a visually appealing way. Among other things, the surface makes it easier for Reddit’s 50+ million daily active users to find their favorite content throughout more than 100,000 active communities on the platform.

Discover Tab was created following user feedback which calls for an easier way to explore current and new interests. According to an email to WeRSM, the surface has brought one in five people to join at least one new community during initial testing.
“We’re ushering in a new era of discovery on Reddit, with images and video top of mind,” said Jason Costa, Director of Product for Content and Communities at Reddit. “We’re making discovering relevant content and communities more intuitive with the Discover Tab. It’s a great new way for people to explore and engage with hundreds of thousands of communities around the world.”
The Discover Tab will learn and adjust to each user’s preferences and behaviors and eventually tailor the content it surfaces to what the user will more likely enjoy the most. “What we show is based on communities they’re already a part of as well as time spent.” This means, for example, that the Tab will lean toward surfacing content related to topics the user has spent more time looking through and engaging with.
The Discover Tab will appear as a new compass icon located on the bottom bar to the left of the home button. Redditors will also be enabled to filter the feed at the top of Discover Tab to find specific topics of interest and surface new content and communities. Content will be shown in a feed underneath the topic filters.
In addition to filtering topics, Redditors can also help their Discover Tab to personalize results over time better. Discover Tab allows access to a feedback mechanism where people can provide their opinion and ask the Tab to show more, less, or no particular content. In this way, the feed will surface a wide variety of content in a visually appealing way.
With Discover Tab, Reddit is also unveiling Community and Profile Drawers, two features to make it easier for Redditors to prioritize the communities they care about most and quickly access their profile.
Community Drawers are now accessible by swiping right or tapping the drop-down menu at the top left on the home screen. They allow Redditors fast access to their communities and custom feeds. Each Drawer is divided into four sections: “your communities,” where the communities subscribed to are sorted and customized; “following,” which groups accounts followed; the “r/all” entry point; and “moderating entry points,” in which moderators can see their mod feed, mod queue, and the subreddits they moderate.
On the other hand, Profile Drawers are where Redditors can access their profile and customize it on the fly by swiping left or tapping on their profile icon at the top right of the home screen.
