Some products exist purely to trigger nostalgia. This one also happens to protect your laptop.
PlayStation has teamed up with Japanese publisher Takarajimasha to launch the First Model Multi Cushion Case BOOK, a padded laptop sleeve inspired by the original PlayStation console released in 1994. And unlike most licensed merchandise, this isn’t just a logo slapped onto a generic accessory.
The case recreates the original console almost detail for detail. The familiar light grey finish is there, along with the distinctive button layout and design elements that made Sony’s first console one of the most recognizable pieces of consumer electronics ever produced.
A PlayStation you can carry under your arm
Measuring 23 x 33 cm and weighing just 177 grams, the slim sleeve is designed to hold laptops, tablets, cables and other everyday essentials. But its real appeal isn’t functionality.
It’s the fact that it looks like someone flattened a first-generation PlayStation and turned it into a lifestyle accessory.
Rather than treating the console as a branding asset, Takarajimasha has approached the design almost like a scale replica. The result feels less like merchandise and more like an object created for the generation that grew up blowing dust out of memory cards and swapping discs between friends.
When gaming nostalgia becomes fashion
The original PlayStation is now more than 30 years old, yet its design remains instantly recognizable, even to people who haven’t touched one in decades.
That staying power has transformed the console from a piece of gaming hardware into a cultural icon. And as brands continue to mine the aesthetics of the 1990s and early 2000s, products like this sit comfortably alongside retro sneakers, vintage tech-inspired accessories and archive streetwear drops.
It’s also part of a broader trend where gaming brands are increasingly moving beyond games themselves and into everyday lifestyle products.
Available this summer in Japan
The PlayStation First Model Multi Cushion Case BOOK launches on July 6 through Seven Net Shopping and participating 7-Eleven stores across Japan.
For anyone who spent the late 90s glued to a CRT television, it might be the closest thing to carrying a PlayStation everywhere without actually carrying a PlayStation.
