OpenAI Wants to Call Data Centers “AI Compute Campuses”

OpenAI may have found a new name for one of the least popular parts of the AI boom: the data center.

OpenAI is now considering calling its facilities “AI compute campuses” as part of a broader public-affairs push. The idea was reportedly discussed by Chris Lehane, the company’s chief global affairs officer, alongside proposals for AI “speed limits,” global standards and a stronger case for how AI can empower people in daily life.

A naming problem with a physical footprint

The language matters because data centers have become a local political problem, not just a technical one. Communities are being asked to absorb the power demand, water use, construction disruption and infrastructure pressure that come with large-scale computing. The phrase “AI compute campus” tries to move the conversation away from industrial infrastructure and toward the future-facing value OpenAI wants associated with it.

That is a familiar communications instinct: make the invisible system feel more legible, more useful and less threatening. But a new label cannot carry the argument on its own. Lehane also described the data-center debate as “good and healthy” and said communities should hold companies accountable for delivering a transformative benefit from these projects.

The rebrand has to do more than sound better

That qualification is the important part. OpenAI appears to understand that public acceptance will not be won through terminology alone. The company will need to connect its infrastructure plans to visible local benefits, clearer negotiations and a credible explanation of who gains from the buildout.

The proposed name also shows how AI companies are preparing to fight over the meaning of infrastructure. OpenAI is not only building computing capacity. It is trying to make that capacity part of a public story about empowerment, national competitiveness and political responsibility.

For marketers and communicators, the lesson is straightforward: when the object itself creates friction, renaming it may open the conversation, but behavior determines whether the new story survives. “AI compute campus” can be an invitation to rethink the category. It cannot substitute for the benefits communities are being asked to accept.
