Instagram Has Switched On Its Timeline Algorithm

Like it or not, it’s happened, and we will all have to deal with it. Yes, Instagram announced back in March, that it was moving away from a chronological timeline. And, it was to be expected.

When it was announced users showed how unhappy they were about Instagram’s plans to switch to an algorithmic feed. We saw (too) many post from brands suddenly asking us to switch on post notifications, because they were worried about their reach.

Well, now it looks like they’ll have to. In a blog post, Instagram has confirmed that the new timeline order – based on “seeing the moments you care about first” – is rolling out to profiles worldwide.

Instagram explained that we miss about 70% of what is on our feeds today. And this is because Instagram has grown, and there are now too many users, sharing too many photos.

Instagram is not risking too much by this, of course. Many users may be angry about the change – probably because they are not confident enough in the quality of the content they share – but the company has been testing the “new order” among selected users for a few months and the results have been nothing but positive:
Over the past few months, we brought this new way of ordering posts to a portion of the community, and we found that people are liking photos more, commenting more and generally engaging with the community in a more active way.
Yes, it will be a hard change. Yes, Instagram is “becoming more like Facebook.” But the truth is that you may soon start seeing more posts you really want to see, no matter how many accounts you follow. All we have to do, is trust that Instagram did a good job creating the algorithm which will now rule our feeds.
