While there are over 170 million people already connected to podcast pages, and over 35 million members of podcast-related fan groups, you would have to leave the Facebook app to listen. Facebook will now start allowing users to listen to podcasts within the Facebook app – while using the app or when it’s in the background.
Furthermore, Facebook is making it easier for users to discover new podcasts, comment on them, and even recommend them to others. Podcast creators will be able to reach new listeners and connect with them directly in the Facebook app. For the time being, the ability to create content will be limited to some users but will be more widely rolled out in the next few months.
In addition to the above, listeners will be able to cut short clips (of up to one minute) from their favorite shows, and easily share them elsewhere. Clips will be an interesting added factor to encourage engagement and conversation. Creators will be able to decide whether to allow the option on their podcasts or not.
In an email sent to podcasters, last week, inviting them to participate, Facebook says that it wants to be “the place where people can enjoy, discuss, and share the podcasts they love with each other.” Podcasters interested in the new product and that have not yet received an invite, can already review the terms and conditions Facebook will prompt them to sign upon joining.
The move is part of a wider intention for Facebook to include voice content.
