Twitter announced that it is starting to roll out a new verification application process and reviewing public verification applications.
After pausing its verification program a few years back, Twitter has been working on revamping the process and making rules and requirements a lot clearer for users who want to get verified.

In the last few months, Twitter has teased the new process for some time and even outlined its new policy in December. The platform also started removing the verified badge from accounts that don’t meet the new criteria.
Now, Twitter is rolling out a new application for verification that gives “more transparency, credibility, and clarity” to the process.
The coveted “blue badge” is not just a status symbol. It’s an important part of distinguishing the authenticity of high-profile accounts.
Therefore, it’s accompanied by new guidelines for verified accounts (in addition to the Twitter Rules that need to be followed by all users), aiming to encourage better conversations on the platform.
Twitter Verification Eligibility
To qualify for verification on Twitter, you must fit the criteria of one of the following categories.
- Government
- Companies, brands, and organizations
- News organizations and journalists
- Entertainment
- Sports and gaming
- Activists, organizers, and other influential individuals
There are specific criteria for each category, which you can find in Twitter’s verification policy; however, you will first need to make sure your account is complete – i.e., you have a profile name, image, and at least a confirmed email address – or phone number.
Furthermore, your account must be active within the last six months. If it’s not, your account will be considered inactive.
How to Apply for Verification on Twitter
Within the next few weeks, everyone will start to see the new verification application within Account Settings. If you can’t see it yet, worry not – it’s rolling out gradually.
- Click on the […] menu
- Go to Settings and privacy.
- Go to Account and scroll to Account information – tap Verification Request
- Tap Start Request
- Choose the category that your account belongs to
- Choose your identity verification option
- Submit your request
