Planet Fitness Makes Gym Culture The Problem, Not The Beginner

Most gym advertising tells you to work harder.

Planet Fitness would rather make fun of the people making you nervous about showing up in the first place.

Its new Australian campaign, “Feeling Gymtimidated?”, created by Engine, exaggerates some of the most familiar characters in modern gym culture: the influencer turning every workout into a content shoot, and the lifters making enough noise to convince everyone else they probably do not belong there. The Beginner Is Not The Joke

The campaign launches with two films.

“Bunny Babe” follows a fitness influencer surrounded by pink activewear, ring lights and the expectation that everyone else should stay out of her shot.

“Lunks” focuses on two men lifting with so much grunting and theatrical effort that the campaign compares the experience to childbirth.

The exaggeration is funny, but the target is very deliberate.

Planet Fitness is not laughing at people who feel uncomfortable in gyms. It is laughing at the behaviors that make them uncomfortable.

That brings the work straight back to the brand’s long-standing Judgement Free Zone positioning: fitness should not require already looking, dressing or behaving like someone who lives at the gym. Planet Fitness Australia describes its clubs as deliberately non-intimidating environments where members can move at their own pace.

Great Positioning Gives You Something To Attack

This is why the campaign works beyond the jokes.

Planet Fitness has a very clear enemy.

Not another gym chain. Not a pricing tier. Not a particular workout.

Gym intimidation.

That gives the creative somewhere to go. The brand can exaggerate protein-fueled grunting, performative lifting, mirrors, fashion pressure and social-content behavior because all of them ladder back to the same tension: the gym can sometimes feel like a place you need to be fit enough to enter.

The campaign extends across TV, video, digital, social, outdoor and radio, with nine additional social films keeping that observation going.

A lot of fitness marketing sells aspiration.

Planet Fitness sells permission.

You do not need to become the person in the gym ad before walking through the door.

You just need a gym that understands why you hesitated.
