Facebook is supposed to be old. Instagram is supposedly under constant threat from TikTok. Threads started life as an opportunistic response to X.
Yet all three are growing engagement.
Meta’s latest earnings provide a useful explanation for why: its social apps are increasingly being powered less by who you follow and more by how well its AI can predict what you want to see next.
Instagram Is Getting Faster
Instagram reached an all-time high for time spent per user globally in Q3, with growth across both Feed and Reels. Meta says recent ranking improvements alone increased Reels time spent by more than 4%.
One number stands out: almost 45% of recommended Reels are now less than one day old, up more than 11 percentage points from the previous quarter.
For creators, that makes the first 24 hours increasingly important. For Instagram, it means the recommendation engine is getting much better at finding promising new content before it has already accumulated millions of views.
Freshness is becoming part of relevance.
AI Is Even Reviving Facebook
Facebook Reels also hit an all-time high for time spent in Q3, growing double digits year over year. Meta credits recommendation improvements, including a new system inspired by large language models that can understand the meaning of content and surface relevant posts before they have accumulated significant engagement.
That is particularly notable for Facebook.
The platform’s challenge was never simply losing users. It was losing attention. People still checked Facebook, but increasingly spent their scrolling time elsewhere.
Reels gave Facebook another reason to stay. AI recommendations are making that reason better.
Threads Is Becoming A Real Third Platform
Then there is Threads.
Mark Zuckerberg says Threads has now overtaken X in monthly active users. Meta previously announced the platform had passed 500 million monthly users, while time spent per user grew more than 20% year over year in Q3.
Again, Meta points to relevance, personalization and timeliness as the drivers.
Across the entire family, Meta now reaches 3.64 billion people every day, up 3% year over year. Its advertising revenue grew 26% in Q3.
But the more interesting story is what is happening underneath those numbers.
Facebook and Instagram were built around the social graph: you followed people, and those people filled your feed.
Meta’s growth engine now looks increasingly like TikTok’s original proposition.
You open the app.
The algorithm figures out what deserves your attention.
And right now, it appears to be getting very good at it.
