A few months ago we saw how the Facebook App managed to hold the top spot in the most-used apps of 2015. Today, it looks that Facebook Lite, the app for slower network connections, has reached 100 million users worldwide.
This is another great success for Facebook. The stripped-down version of the popular app launched less than a year ago, and it has already attracted a significant number of users. As the official announcement explains, Facebook Lite is currently the fastest growing app in Facebook’s arsenal.
With 1.6 billion people not having access to 3G or 4G networks, and those experiencing connectivity problems in urban areas, it was crucial for Facebook to develop an app that would have all the basic features of Facebook, while consuming limited network resources.
While it’s still a new app, Facebook takes good care of it, making sure that it has set goals for this year as well. For 2016, the team behind Lite promises to stay below the 1 MB app size, minimise data usage and improve functionality over 2G networks. Also they promise to build an app that works on Gingerbread and on a 2009-class device.
