Instagram Adds “AI Creator” Labels to Boost Transparency

Instagram is introducing a new way to signal when content is powered by artificial intelligence, with the rollout of “AI Creator” labels across profiles and posts.

The feature is designed for creators who regularly use AI tools to produce content.

Once enabled, the “AI Creator” tag will appear directly on their profile, along with additional context explaining that their posts are generated or enhanced using artificial intelligence.

Beyond the profile label, Instagram is also refining how AI-generated content is identified in-feed.

As explained by Instagram: “This new label builds on our existing ‘AI info’ labels that you can apply when posting AI content and that we automatically add whenever we detect that AI tools were used in the creation process. … In instances when content is labelled as ‘AI info’ and posted by a labelled AI creator, the ‘AI info’ label would appear on the content instead of the ‘AI creator’ label.”

In other words, the platform is creating a layered system: one label for the creator, another for the content itself.

The move comes as AI-generated visuals, voices, and even personalities are becoming increasingly indistinguishable from human-created content. By adding clearer signals, Instagram is trying to reduce confusion, limit misinformation, and give users more context about what they’re seeing.

But there’s a tension here.

On one hand, Instagram has been doubling down on originality, recently cracking down on aggregators and encouraging creators to produce their own work. On the other, AI tools are making it easier than ever to generate content at scale, sometimes without a human touch at all.

This update sits right in the middle of that contradiction.

Rather than resisting AI, Instagram is choosing to normalize it while attempting to label it clearly. It’s less about stopping AI content, and more about making sure users know when they’re looking at it.

And as AI continues to blur the line between real and synthetic, that distinction might become one of the most important pieces of context on the platform.
