One of the internet’s first viral videos – ‘Charlie bit my finger’ – will be auctioned off as an NFT this week and then deleted.
Back in 2007, Howard Davies-Carr uploaded a video to YouTube to share with family and friends. The stars of the now-viral video are Charlie and Harry, Davies-Carr’s two sons. The 56-second video features them in a “random moment” that became one of the internet’s most well-known videos.

“Charlie Bit My Finger” has now been viewed by more than 880 million people but will soon cease to exist. On May 22, the video will be auctioned off as an NFT on Origin Protocol and permanently deleted from the internet. That last part should, of course, affect the NFT’s current and future value.
Charlie and Harry are now well into their teens – 17 and 15- and over the years, their dad’s video has given them many opportunities for fame. However, the move to auction it off right now is also a smart one.
Interest in NFTs and blockchain technology is at an all-time high, so related news is getting a lot of attention. Furthermore, other recent NFT sales prove that they can be quite lucrative, and the family is taking notes.
“We thought it would be cool to see if we could do the same, seeing NFTs as a new, interesting, and exciting part of the internet,” says Harry. “And maybe it’s optimistic, but if enough people heard about this, the video might get a bit closer to one billion views before it goes down, maybe we’ll hit 900 million at least.”
In a somewhat “cheesy” twist, the bidder who wins the auction will also be allowed to create a one-of-a-kind parody of the original video – with the stars themselves. “This is not the end of the beloved video, but rather a new beginning,” the family explains.
