Carlsberg Turns VAR Checks Into Free Beer Moments

VAR has become one of the most divisive parts of modern football. Every time the referee pauses the game to review a decision, the energy drops. Celebrations are put on hold, supporters stare at the screen, and everyone waits for a verdict that always seems to take a little too long.

Carlsberg has found a way to make that dead time feel a lot more useful.

Together with agency NEXT-DC, the brand launched “The Best VAR Decision”, an activation that gives fans a free beer every time a VAR check happens.

A real-time engine connected to the match

The activation debuted in one of Sofia’s biggest sports bars, where Carlsberg turned VAR interruptions into automatic happy hour moments.

Behind the stunt is a real-time system developed by NEXT-DC. The engine monitors live match data and detects when a VAR review is triggered during the broadcast. Once that happens, it automatically activates interactive signage inside the bar. A custom lamp placed on the counter lights up at the exact moment the VAR check begins, while a large sign explains the rule: VAR in progress, Carlsberg is on the house.

The result is a simple but highly visible mechanic. Fans do not need to wait for the referee’s final signal or even keep watching the screen. The bar itself becomes part of the match experience, reacting in real time to what is happening on the pitch.

Turning football’s most frustrating pause into a brand moment

What makes the idea work is that it does not try to fight the frustration of VAR. It uses it.

For many fans, VAR checks are the emotional low point of a match. They interrupt the rhythm of play, delay the celebration, and often create more tension than clarity. Carlsberg flips that moment into something people can actually look forward to.

Instead of silence, there is a rush to the counter. Instead of collective frustration, there is a shared reward. Instead of waiting passively for a decision, fans get a small ritual that gives the pause a new purpose.

For now, **The Best VAR Decision** has only been tested in Bulgaria. The activation took place on March 21 during four Premier League matches, turning every VAR review into a Carlsberg moment inside the bar. But NEXT-DC is already looking at how the idea could travel. The agency wants to bring the concept to more venues during the FIFA World Cup, where VAR will almost certainly become one of the most talked-about parts of the tournament again.

VAR may never be loved by football fans. But free beer could make it a little easier to forgive.
