After running 26.2 miles, most people want something cold.
Burger King took that very literally.
For the Dublin Marathon, the brand and BBH Dublin turned two oversized Burger King drink cups into actual cold-plunge baths, inviting finishers to climb inside and cool down after the race. The activation, called “A Whopper of a Finish,” took place on October 25 in partnership with Saunos Dublin.
The Packaging Became The Experience
Runners and a guest could book a complimentary 45-minute sauna and cold-plunge session, while marathon finishers could also claim a free Whopper at participating restaurants.
But the smartest part is the cups themselves.
Burger King could have put its logo on a normal ice bath. Instead, it enlarged one of its most recognizable objects until the packaging became the entire experience.
The runner literally replaces the soda.
It is instantly understandable, absurd enough to photograph and unmistakably Burger King without needing much explanation.
The Campaign Started Before The Finish Line
The idea also followed runners along the course.
Outdoor and digital placements borrowed the language of marathon support signs, with lines including “Eyes on the fries” and “Legs on fire? The Whopper is too.” The food waiting after the race became part encouragement, part punchline.
Burger King was not an official Dublin Marathon sponsor, which makes the execution even more interesting. Instead of buying its way into the event, the brand found moments around the marathon where it could naturally be useful: motivation during the race, recovery afterward and food once the running stopped.
That is a much stronger version of event marketing than putting a logo beside someone else’s experience.
The cup was already a Burger King asset.
BBH just made it big enough to climb into.
