The 2026 Digiday Awards Show Participation Becoming Marketing’s New Currency

The 2026 Digiday Awards point to a marketing shift that is becoming harder to ignore: the strongest campaigns are not simply putting messages in front of audiences. They are giving people something to do with them.

That can mean entering a game, asking for a product that did not exist, following a creator-led story, or moving from inspiration to purchase inside the same campaign system. The common thread is participation with a measurable consequence.

Participation is becoming the creative brief

Adidas and Gamefam won Best Partnership for the adidas Football Festival on Roblox. According to the 2026 Digiday Awards announcement, the activation generated more than 51 million visits and 468 million brand interactions in four weeks.

The important detail is not simply that Adidas appeared in Roblox. The brand placed football culture inside a space where younger audiences were already playing, socializing, and expressing identity. The campaign gave the audience a role inside the brand world rather than asking them to leave their behavior behind and watch an ad.

Poppi’s win for Most Innovative Brand shows the same logic in a different form. A viral social post about an imaginary soda flavor became a limited-edition product, then expanded into broader retail distribution after consumer demand grew.

In that case, the audience did not just react to a campaign. Its reaction helped determine what the brand made and where it sold it. Social conversation became an early product signal.

The commercial test is getting closer to the idea

Walmart Connect’s Best Use of Retail Media win adds the performance layer. Its Backyard Escapes campaign with Vizio combined entertainment, influencer storytelling, experiential activity, and retail channels around Walmart’s Patio & Garden Event. Digiday reports that the campaign contributed to nearly 40% year-over-year growth in gross merchandise value during the event.

That combination matters because it connects cultural attention to a commercial endpoint without treating them as separate phases. The audience can discover the idea through entertainment, encounter it through creators or experiences, and act on it through retail.

The awards also included new categories for Best Activation, Best Podcast, Best Search Optimization Strategy, Best Sports Marketing Partnership, and Best Use of Agentic AI. That mix suggests the industry is rewarding more than polished creative output. It is looking for work that can move between communities, platforms, search behavior, automation, and commerce.

For brands, the lesson is practical. Participation cannot be added after the campaign idea is finished. The strongest work builds a meaningful audience action into the concept itself, then makes that action useful to the business. Attention still matters, but the winning campaigns increasingly show what people did with it.
