The rumour has been going on for a while now, but two weeks ago it looked like Twitter was really about to remove the 140-character limit. Of course it wasn’t the first time we heard this, and it is very likely Twitter is seriously considering it. But while Twitter is thinking about it, its Chinese counterpart – Sina Weibo – has actually gone ahead with it.

On January 28, Sina Weibo will begin removing its 140-character limit. And it was announced by Wang Gaofei himself, the platform’s CEO.

The new format will allow users to expand beyond the 140-character limit, but it is not clear what the new upper limit will be, if any. However, much like Twitter, the new format will still show only 140 characters in a user’s feed, with a link appear that can be clicked to reveal the additional content.
Sina Weibo will start removing the limit for selected users, and has explained that a wider rollout should be expected roughly a month later.
Now the question is: will Twitter follow? My guess is that Twitter could not be happier in fact, as it will now have a real-life beta test that will help them decide whether it could be a positive move for the platform or not. What do you think?
