Threads Is Testing A “Mark As Spoiler” Feature

Threads is testing a new feature that lets users hide text and images marked as spoilers giving audiences the choice to opt in before seeing potentially sensitive or story-revealing content.

According to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the update is currently in global testing. Users in the test group can now highlight text or tap an image and choose the new “Mark spoiler” option. Once activated, the content becomes blurred: on desktop, it’s covered by a gray block; on mobile, it’s veiled behind animated floating dots. Tap to reveal.

It’s a simple, Reddit-style feature,  but one that could shift the norms of digital conversation.

Sure, it’s great for hiding Game of Thrones plot twists. But it’s also a subtle but meaningful move toward consent-based content sharing.

In a social landscape increasingly filled with emotional posts, hot takes, and real-time reactions, the ability to choose when or whether to engage with intense or sensitive material is becoming part of modern social etiquette. And now, Threads is making that etiquette native to the platform.

Meta spokesperson Alec Booker confirmed  that the test is global, though access is currently limited. Mobile is prioritized for now, but improvements for desktop are in the works.

Whether it’s spoilers, trigger warnings, or emotionally heavy content, this test signals something bigger: platforms are beginning to bake empathy into their UX. Small features like this can foster trust, reduce outrage, and support more thoughtful engagement,  something many users crave, but rarely get.

In short? It’s not just about what you post. It’s about how people experience it.
