Things are getting interesting! Swarm – formerly known as Foursquare – is now adding Perks and Challenges that will reward users for their check-ins and loyalty.
First of all, Swarm has partnered with retailers to offer rewards to its users. Only this time, they will be real rewards. Up until now, users could earn Swarm coins, but it wasn’t really clear how these could be used. Now, users will have the opportunity to participate in Swarm Perks, a discount program that adds rewards to their check-ins at over 60 retailers.
Each time a user is near a retailer that offers a discount, a money bag will appear right next to the check-in location. Upon checking in, users will receive a discount code to be used at the point of sale. So, what is the future of Swarm coins? Only time will tell.

As far as Swarm Challenges are concerned, according the official blog, users will now have the opportunity to subscribe to weekly challenges, for a chance to win actual prizes and not just coins. Users will receive a notification on their app, prompting them to enter the challenge and check-in to specific places. Once the challenge is accepted and completed, users will be eligible to win.
The first challenge to kick off this new feature is Swarm’s Summer Kickoff. All participants will have to check-in at 3 summer spots (think beaches, pools, bars, and more) in the next two weeks, to be entered to win $10,000 towards a dream vacation.
All updates are now available in the US, and we should expect worldwide availability later this year. Well-played, Swarm.
