Snap Map now counts more than 400 million monthly active users, a new milestone for one of Snapchat’s core features.
Remember the days of foursquare? I loved this app, being the mayor of my favorite spots meant everything. Until it didn’t and the app disappeared, only to be one of the biggest geolocation data providers.
Well foursquare days might be long gone, it seems sharing your location and using that data to discover local hotspots and find new things to do isn’t over with.
When it first launched in 2017, Snap Map was “just” a way users to see their friends’ locations and browse public snaps from around the world. But over time, it evolved to offer ways for users to discover new places. And today, the feature counts over 400M MAUs.

Snap Map has become a crucial part of the Snapchat experience. Not only that, but it gives the platform an undisputed competitive edge over other platforms like Instagram or TikTok, which do not offer location sharing nor real-time social discovery.
That could change, of course, with Instagram reportedly working on a “Friend Map” that would allow users to see their friends’ locations in real time.
But for now, Snap is winning this game: “Snap Map is one of the most used mobile maps in the world, and we’re thrilled to see our community continue to grow,” said Ceci Mourkogiannis, VP of Product at Snap. “The Snap Map is helping hundreds of millions connect with friends and their favorite places and discover what’s happening around them, making the world feel more connected every day.”
Snap map offers even more, with things like “Footsteps” – which lets you see where you have been and how much of the world you have explored – as well as “Promoted Places” that allows brands to advertise and showcase all of their locations on Snap Map.
