Reddit is giving users a clearer choice between discovering something new and catching up on what they already follow. The platform is introducing separate For You and Following feeds, with the experience rolling out globally over the next few weeks. Reddit says the change is designed to help people find more communities while giving them greater control over what appears in their feed.
That distinction matters because recommendation feeds often combine two different jobs: keeping up with familiar interests and introducing people to adjacent ones. Reddit is now making those jobs visible.
Reddit separates discovery from routine
The new For You feed combines posts from communities a user has joined with recommendations connected to their interests. It is intended to surface relevant communities and conversations they might not otherwise encounter.
Following, by contrast, only shows posts from communities the user has joined. It is the more focused option for catching up without asking the recommendation system to widen the session.
Users can switch between the two feeds at any time, and Reddit says the app will remember which feed they last viewed when they return. That small piece of continuity is important. The choice is not being framed as a one-time preference buried in settings. It becomes part of the everyday browsing experience.
The feed becomes a choice, not just a ranking
Reddit’s broader argument is that recommendations should lead people from an interest into a community, and then into a conversation. That is a more participatory ambition than simply maximizing the next post viewed. Discovery is valuable to Reddit when it creates a reason to join, contribute and return.
The platform also says it is experimenting with more ways for people to shape their feeds, including hiding posts and indicating what they want to see less of. Those controls point to a product tension that every large social platform now faces: recommendation is useful when it expands a user’s world, but tiring when it feels unavoidable.
For Reddit, the strategic move is to make exploration feel intentional without removing algorithmic discovery from the default experience. The platform still gets to recommend communities and conversations, but users get a clearer exit from that mode when they simply want to catch up. That could make discovery feel less like interruption and more like a choice, which is likely to matter as Reddit tries to turn casual browsing into deeper community participation.
