Somewhere in Hokkaido, a giant Poké Ball is sitting in the middle of a forest.
And unlike every collectible version that came before it, this one has enough room for people to sleep inside.
Pokémon Sleep has partnered with Japanese hospitality company NOT A HOTEL to create the Poké Ball-Themed Hotel, a real overnight retreat inspired by one of the most recognizable objects in gaming.
The spherical structure will welcome its first guests this month, but there is an important catch. It is not a conventional hotel, and fans cannot simply reserve a room.
Stays will be awarded to winners through a special campaign, with the application details and full interior reveal scheduled for September 15.
A Poké Ball Built For Humans
The first images show the giant red and white sphere surrounded by trees in an undisclosed part of Hokkaido.
Its exterior stays remarkably faithful to the original design. A black band wraps around the middle, while the familiar circular button becomes the architectural focal point at the front.
Footage from the teaser also reveals a separate entrance at the rear and a large window looking into the surrounding forest. Beyond those glimpses, Pokémon and NOT A HOTEL are keeping the interior hidden.
The official announcement describes the project as a space where people can experience the same sense of comfort and rest that a Poké Ball supposedly provides for Pokémon. NOT A HOTEL says it used its architecture and technology to turn that idea into somewhere humans can genuinely stay.
No dimensions, floor plan or list of amenities have been released yet. That mystery is part of the attraction.
Pokémon fans have spent three decades sending creatures into Poké Balls without knowing exactly what the experience feels like. The hotel turns that unanswered question into something a person can finally enter.
The Collaboration Makes Sense Because It Starts With Sleep
This could easily have been a visual stunt with very little connecting the partners beyond a famous shape.
Instead, Pokémon Sleep gives the idea a functional reason to exist.
Launched in 2023, the mobile game records and analyzes sleep while rewarding players with different Pokémon sleeping styles. The longer someone uses it, the more sleeping Pokémon they can discover gathering around Snorlax.
NOT A HOTEL contributes the physical experience. The Japanese company specializes in distinctive residences that combine architecture, technology and hospitality.
A teaser shared by Pokémon Sleep says the hotel experience has been considered around the way light enters, the quietness of the environment, airflow and the selection of bedding.
That makes the project more than a familiar shape enlarged for social media.
Pokémon Sleep brings the ritual of rest. NOT A HOTEL turns that ritual into a designed environment. The Poké Ball connects the two.
The collaboration works because each partner has a specific job.
You Cannot Simply Book It
The Poké Ball hotel will only be available to people selected through the upcoming campaign.
Application instructions are scheduled to be released through the official campaign website on September 15. The complete interior and further details about the overnight experience will be revealed at the same time.
The exact location remains undisclosed. Pokémon has also not announced the available dates, number of winners, eligibility requirements or whether entering the campaign will involve a purchase.
What it has confirmed is that the hotel will not open to the general public during the campaign period. There is currently no booking page and no nightly price.

That changes how the project should be understood.
This is not Pokémon entering the hospitality business with a new resort. It is a temporary, highly exclusive experience designed to generate imagination far beyond the small number of people who will stay there.
The campaign begins working before anyone steps inside. The hidden location, unrevealed interior and winner-only access give fans three mysteries to follow.
Pokémon Turns Its Most Recognizable Object Into A Place
Pokémon-themed accommodation already exists in Japan.
MIMARU operates Pokémon Rooms across Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, surrounding guests with dozens of characters, Poké Ball furniture, themed tableware and a giant Snorlax waiting on the bed.
The Hokkaido project takes a different approach.
Instead of decorating an ordinary room with Pokémon, it turns the building itself into the brand asset.
The Poké Ball does not need a logo or character standing beside it. Its shape and color system are recognizable from across a forest clearing.
That is what makes the concept so powerful.
Pokémon is not simply placing its intellectual property inside a hotel. It is asking what would happen if one of the most familiar objects from its fictional universe existed at full human scale.
The result is architecture as fandom, an image designed to make millions of people imagine an experience that only a handful will ever have.
Pokémon will reveal what is hiding inside on September 15.
Until then, the biggest question in Hokkaido is the same one fans have been asking since 1996: what exactly happens inside a Poké Ball?
