The world’s most famous humanoid robot just sold its first artwork, created in collaboration with a human artist.
Sophia the robot might still not be self-aware, but she can do many things. Apart from being interviewed by Angela Merkel, performing a duet with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show,” or showing up at NYFW, or addressing NATO, who thought that Sophia could paint? It turns out that she can.
In collaboration with digital artist and partner at Eterna Capital (a blockchain investment firm), Andrea Bonaceto, Sophia painted a self-portrait based on Bonaceto’s initial portrait of her.
The painting was then turned into an NFT (non-fungible token) and auctioned off to the highest bidder.
The NFT, which sold on Crypto art platform Nifty Gateway for $688,888, is possibly the first artwork created (at least in part) by an AI, with SingularityNET describing it as “the world’s first humanoid robot #AI generated #NFT.” The buyer is a mysterious digital artist, 888.
The sale includes “Sophia Instantiation,” a 12-second video file showing how the artwork was created, and a physical artwork painted by Sophia.
Other notable NFT sales include a JPG created by digital Mike Winkelmann (aka Beeple), auctioned off by Christie’s earlier this month for almost $70 million, and Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s first tweet which sold as an NFT for close to $3 million.
