Meta has released a new report highlighting the importance of maximizing inclusion in the mobile gaming industry.
Meta recently published a new study on the importance of overcoming the diversity gap in the growing mobile gaming industry.
The 36-page report looks at how game developers should maximize inclusion within their projects to provide a welcoming space for people of all genders and sexual orientations and foster acceptance in society overall.

Gaming is increasingly becoming the dominant form of entertainment. The $160 billion industry generates more revenue than TV, music, and movies, and thanks to the high levels of smartphone penetration, mobile gaming made up 57% of global video games revenue last year.
Today’s gamer population is also the most diverse the industry has ever seen. It comprises people of all ethnicities, ages, genders, sexual orientations, and abilities.
Games, however, don’t always reflect that kaleidoscope of experiences and still fall short of authentic representation on screen, often leading to reinforcing stereotypes that alienate gamers and encourage bullying. “These experiences make gamers more likely to feel excluded and, in turn, less likely to engage,” the report suggests.
Meta’s study reports on the ever-growing diversity of players worldwide, explaining that diversity presents “a massive opportunity for game developers and games companies to more authentically represent society and the industry’s customer base.”
Furthermore, the study explains that “to make people feel included and comfortable – and position itself for long-term success – the gaming industry must meaningfully address representation and inclusion across several areas, including the games themselves, the industry composition, and how games are marketed.”
In addition, it provides a list of recommendations on how developers can maximize inclusion in their games and highlights its key findings in an infographic.
Finally, the ever-growing diversity of players worldwide presents a “massive opportunity for game developers and games companies to more authentically represent society and the industry’s customer base.” It suggests that inclusive environments help drive player engagement and that authentic advertising plays an essential role in fostering diversity and inclusion.
