Drive Your Social Accounts Like A Train, Not An Airplane

Often times, I see new businesses pop up on Facebook or Twitter. They usually post every day and seem to have a really strong social media strategy. Then a couple months pass and they post less and less. Maybe their social media person left, the owner is too busy and/or social media starts to take a back seat to other efforts of the business.

I also see abandoned social media accounts on a daily basis. Facebook pages that are out of date and Twitter handles that haven’t tweeted in years. Here’s a secret. I unfollow anyone who hasn’t tweeted in over 30 days. Unless it’s my parents. Yes, both of my parents are on Twitter! So here’s a hint. If you don’t keep your social media accounts updated, you will lose your followers.

I think of maintaining a social media presence like a train. It is better to have a slow and steady pace even though it might take longer to get there. Taking a train may seem less effective than an airplane, but you often get closer to your target.

It is hard to get started on social media, and even harder to keep going. People say they feel really overwhelmed when it comes to social media. Social media is not something that’s going to be crossed off your list. If you’re going to put it on a list, put it on your daily to-do list. It’s not a one-time project. Social media will most likely never go away in our lifetime, so as long as you are representing a brand, you will be creating content for social media.

Here are the top reasons why brands lose steam on social media:

  • Ran out of ideas
  • Lost motivation
  • Social media person quit
  • Owner gets too busy
  • Lack of knowledge

Takeaway: Be a train, not an airplane. It’s better to take longer to get there with a steady pace than to rush through it and miss possible opportunities.
