A Dissected iPhone Duo May Have Exposed the Hinge Problem Behind Crackgate

The iPhone Duo’s reported screen failures may have a more specific cause than ordinary foldable-phone fragility. A teardown suggests the problem could be concentrated in one small, vulnerable part of the hinge.

The finding matters because early complaints describe phones failing after only a few hours of use. If the damage is tied to a repeatable mechanical weak spot, the issue is less about isolated accidents and more about whether the Duo’s most important component can survive normal use.

A small hinge link may be creating a big failure

YouTuber CuriousHagi reproduced a cracked iPhone Duo screen during durability testing before taking the phone apart. The teardown found a complex hinge built from a gear-like central mechanism and two types of linking hinges.

The suspected failure point is one of the middle links. It is thinner than the links above and below it, and it snapped at a small notch that may make the part especially vulnerable under pressure. CuriousHagi also found marks where the hinge met the support plate, suggesting that the mechanism may have caught as the phone opened or closed.

That does not yet establish a confirmed cause. It does, however, offer a more useful explanation than simply cataloguing broken screens. The reports appear to cluster around the same location, and the teardown points to a physical design detail that could help explain why.

For a foldable, the hinge is the product

Foldables ask consumers to trust a mechanism they cannot easily inspect. The display gets the attention, but the hinge determines whether the device can perform its central trick thousands of times without turning a premium phone into a repair problem.

That makes the suspected Duo failure unusually damaging to confidence. A scratch or isolated cracked screen is a familiar ownership risk. A hinge that catches, snaps, and breaks the display suggests the phone may fail during the very action it was designed to repeat.

Apple has not been shown here to have confirmed the diagnosis, and the teardown is not the same as a broad engineering investigation. The next meaningful test will be whether Apple acknowledges a pattern, changes the repair process, or explains how affected owners will be supported.

For now, the lesson is straightforward: with a foldable, durability is not a supporting feature. It is the product promise itself.
