Apple is reportedly planning to change the way it names its operating systems, according to a Bloomberg report.
Traditionally, Apple names each new version of its operating system by adding the next available version number, e.g. iOS 17 to iOS 18 etc… There has been a couple of issues with this naming convention, the most obvious being the different version numbers across iOS, iPadOS, MacOS and watchOS. Add to that the confusion of users who struggle to remember which version they are using.

In a naming “overall” Apple will now name its operating systems by year, meaning the update after the current iOS 18 will be iOS 26 (for 2026) instead of iOS 19 for example. This slight change paves the way for a more consistent branding among Apple products with the rollout of iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26, Bloomberg says. The changes will be announced at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 9th.
WWDC is rumored to host several big announcements, with new user interfaces, expected new features for AirPods, Siri, its Vision Pro headset, and numerous new AI features.
