During a presentation at CES, Twitter revealed a new feature under development that will let users define the organic audience for their tweets.
Twitter has long been working on making its platform safer for people to share. But so far, targeting your tweets to a specific audience could only be done via promoted tweets. And even then, it could not stop some users from getting involved in the conversation.
The new feature – called “Conversation Dynamics” – was announced during a presentation at CES yesterday and brought to our attention by Steven Bartlett, CEO of Social Chain. It lets users decide on the audience for each unique tweet directly from the composer window, giving organic targeting a whole new meaning on the platform.
While the feature does not seem to restrict reach or viewability to a tweet, it controls who can reply and engage in the conversation, thanks to 4 preset audiences:
- Global (anyone can reply)
- Group (only people you follow and mention can reply)
- Panel (only the people mentioned in your tweet can reply)
- Statement (just for you, nobody can reply)
Twitter plans on testing the feature early this year before assessing and potentially rolling it out globally.
