Instagram’s Adam Mosseri Says AI Negativity Will Get Worse

Instagram is not pretending the backlash against AI will fade. In an interview, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said frustration and anger around AI are likely to get worse over the next few years.

His explanation is less about a simple generational divide than a growing fear of being left behind. Mosseri pointed to concerns about creative ownership, model training, safety, job displacement and the possibility that creators, engineers and other professionals could see their work displaced.

Instagram’s AI problem is now a trust problem

Mosseri also acknowledged that Instagram’s ranking systems do not treat all AI content equally. The platform does not rank AI creators differently by default, he said, but “AI slop” creates a quality problem. Some AI content is useful, while some is low-value, repetitive or misleading. That distinction is becoming harder to make at scale.

Instagram has already moved toward labeling AI accounts and, according to the report, began requiring some AI accounts to identify themselves. The platform has also been trying to address misleading AI content, including celebrity deepfakes. Mosseri’s position is that banning AI content outright is not practical.

The platform can normalize AI without making it feel safe

That leaves Instagram managing a difficult contradiction. It wants to accommodate AI creators and the volume they bring to the platform, while also signaling that audiences should know when something is synthetic and whether it deserves attention.

For creators, the issue is not only whether AI tools are permitted. It is whether the platform can protect the value of original work when synthetic content becomes cheaper, faster and harder to distinguish. For Instagram, labels may improve transparency, but they do not resolve the deeper question of who benefits when creation becomes abundant and trust becomes scarce.

The strategic consequence is straightforward: AI adoption will not be judged only by what platforms allow people to make. It will be judged by whether people still believe the content, the ranking system and their own place inside it.
