TikTok is making the jump from shopping inspiration to shopping action harder to ignore. The platform is introducing Buy Direct, an in-app checkout option that lets people purchase directly from brands without leaving TikTok, alongside an AI-powered Shopping Assistant designed to answer the questions that usually slow a sale.
The move matters because TikTok is no longer treating commerce as a destination layered onto entertainment. It is trying to make the feed itself the place where discovery, consideration and purchase happen.
TikTok wants fewer exits between discovery and purchase
TikTok’s official announcement describes Buy Direct as a one-click checkout experience that can appear across TikTok touchpoints, including the For You feed. The feature is separate from TikTok Shop and is being built with commerce and payment partners including Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe.
That distinction is important. TikTok Shop is a marketplace inside the platform. Buy Direct is closer to a bridge between TikTok’s discovery engine and a brand’s existing commerce operation. The brand remains part of the transaction, while TikTok tries to remove the moment when a user leaves the app, opens another browser and has time to reconsider.
The strategy resembles the wider shift toward creator content becoming a direct commercial asset, as ShopMy’s approach to turning creator content into paid ads also shows. The distance between attention and action keeps shrinking.
The assistant is there to handle hesitation
Shopping Assistant addresses a different part of the same problem. TikTok says the conversational tool can help with product details, shipping, sizing, availability and purchasing. In other words, it is designed for the questions that appear after a product has already won attention but before the shopper has committed.
TikTok’s business materials say the assistant can use brand-approved information from a merchant knowledge base, including product details, offers and frequently asked questions. That gives brands a way to keep shoppers engaged while providing answers inside TikTok’s environment.
The implication is bigger than an AI chatbot attached to a product page. TikTok is positioning itself as the place where intent gets formed, clarified and converted. Its advantage is not simply that it can host a checkout. It can place the checkout immediately after a creator demonstration, trend or recommendation has made the product feel relevant.
For brands, that raises the value of the information surrounding a product. A strong TikTok presence will increasingly need more than persuasive creative. It will need accurate sizing, availability, shipping and product answers that an AI system can confidently use. The brands that prepare that information well may find that TikTok becomes less like an awareness channel and more like a sales interface.
