YouTube Is Becoming Hollywood’s Casting Call for Creator IP

Creator platforms are becoming development pipelines for Hollywood. Viral Nation Head of Programming Paul Telner told Tubefilter that streamers, studios and production companies are now approaching creators with a different attitude: less control-first, more partnership-led.

That shift is visible in Viral Nation’s own description of the market. In its creator IP analysis, the company argues that studios, streamers and brands are competing for talent that can become more than a campaign or a single piece of content.

The audience is now part of the pitch

The change is not simply that creators are being offered bigger deals. It is that their existing audiences, formats and creative identities are increasingly treated as evidence that a larger entertainment property might work.

Telner described the old model to Tubefilter as one in which traditional networks wanted control of the creator’s YouTube channel and social ecosystem. Now, he says, conversations with streamers and production companies are more collaborative, with creators entering meetings as partners rather than untested talent.

Viral Nation is using professional magician Xavier Mortimer as one example. Mortimer has a show in development with the company, and a planned VidSummit panel will examine how his digital presence, performance style and brand can be packaged for television and film.

Creators are being developed, not simply cast

That distinction matters. A creator’s audience may open the door, but the next stage involves identifying a repeatable format, building a production team, choosing distribution partners and deciding who owns the resulting IP.

The model also gives platforms a new role. YouTube and social feeds are no longer only places where finished entertainment is distributed. They are testing grounds where studios can observe audience behavior before committing to a larger property.

For creators, the opportunity is substantial, but so is the negotiation. A large audience can create leverage only if the creator protects the relationship, controls enough of the underlying business and understands what is being exchanged for scale. The next creator breakout may still begin with a phone, but the most valuable outcome will be the ability to turn that attention into an owned entertainment world.
