Rexona Turned Messi’s Dribbles Into A Font Fans Can Decode

Lionel Messi spent more than two decades drawing lines defenders could not predict. Now Rexona has turned those lines into letters.

Created as a tribute to Messi following his retirement from international football, GOAT Font is a downloadable typeface in which every character represents a real play performed by Argentina’s number 10.

Dribbles become curves. Changes of direction become sharp corners. Runs across the pitch become the strokes of an alphabet.

It is part design project, part football archive and part puzzle for the fans who remember every move.

Every Letter Begins With A Play

Rexona Argentina developed the typeface with designer Pedro Destefano, using the paths Messi traced while playing for his country as the raw material.

Rather than reproducing Messi’s handwriting or placing his face across another piece of commemorative merchandise, the project focuses on the thing that made him unmistakable: the way he moved.

Destefano combined AI-assisted reconstruction with manual work to turn those sequences into usable letterforms.

The finished characters twist, loop and double back like the movement lines drawn over match footage.

The result looks unconventional because Messi rarely reached his destination by taking the conventional route.

Rexona Left Out The Answer Key

Rexona says every letter represents a Messi play, but it has not published a complete guide showing which moment inspired each character.

Fans have therefore started trying to decode the alphabet themselves.

Some believe the “S” reproduces a turn against Australia at the 2022 World Cup. Others have connected the “G” and “T” to Messi’s performance against Croatia in the semifinal.

Those theories have sent supporters back through old footage, comparing the font’s shapes with memorable dribbles, passes and changes of direction.

The missing explanation may be helping the campaign. Instead of presenting fans with a finished tribute, Rexona gave them a mystery to continue discussing.

A Tribute Fans Can Actually Use

GOAT Font is available as a free OTF download from Rexona Argentina.

That means supporters can install it and use Messi’s movements to create their own posters, messages and tributes.

This gives the campaign a longer life than a conventional farewell ad. The work does not end when someone finishes watching the launch video. It becomes a creative tool that can keep circulating through fan culture.

For a deodorant brand built around movement, the source material also makes sense. Rexona is not borrowing an arbitrary piece of Messi’s fame. It is turning movement itself into the idea.

Celebrity Endorsement Without The Usual Celebrity Ad

Most celebrity campaigns begin with recognition.

Put the famous person in the visual, place the product nearby and allow familiarity to do the work.

GOAT Font begins with a more interesting question: what does this person do that nobody else can replicate?

In Messi’s case, the answer is not simply scoring goals or wearing number 10. It is the route he takes through space, the sudden turn and the line nobody else saw until he had already drawn it.

Rexona transformed that behavior into an asset fans can recognize, investigate and use.

The strongest celebrity partnerships do more than borrow a famous face. They translate what made that person famous into an idea only that partnership could produce.

Messi spent his career writing football history with his feet.

Rexona simply turned it into a font.
