X is turning old usernames into a new revenue stream. The platform is launching a marketplace for inactive handles, allowing Premium subscribers to request and purchase unused usernames, from full names to coveted one-word handles like @Pizza or @Tom.
The new system introduces two categories of handles:
- Priority handles: think @GabrielJones or @ParadoxAI. These are free to request for Premium+ and Premium Business users. Once approved, X transfers the handle at no cost. However, if you cancel or downgrade your subscription, the handle reverts back to your old one after 30 days.
- Rare handles: short, highly sought-after names or culturally significant words (like @Pizza or @One). These will be sold directly via public drops or invite-only purchases, with prices starting around $2,500 and reportedly reaching seven figures for the most valuable ones.
Requests will be reviewed within three business days, with X claiming that the new marketplace will ensure a “fair and secure distribution process” while avoiding bot spam or mass squatting.
For users eyeing a specific inactive handle, X will let them register interest and be notified if it becomes available.
Beyond unlocking digital collectibles in the form of usernames, this move could help X bolster Premium subscriptions and diversify revenue as its ad business continues to falter.
