WME Launches Creator Labs To Build Creator-Owned Media Businesses

WME is turning creator representation into creator operations. The agency has launched Creator Labs, an internal team designed to help talent build YouTube channels and other online audiences into owned media businesses. WME describes the team as supporting channel development, expanded distribution and new revenue opportunities.

The move reflects a simple change in the talent business: creators increasingly own the audience relationship, the distribution channel and the commercial upside. Representation is no longer only about securing deals around someone else’s platform. It is also about helping build the platform itself.

WME Wants To Operate The Creator Business

Creator Labs works across the channel lifecycle, from early ideation and production to posting, distribution and sponsorship sales. Tubefilter reports that WME brought in 11 people to support Creator Labs and its adjacent Creator Sales team, while also investing in video strategy and operations company Astra Media.

The early examples show the model clearly. WME helped Manchester City striker Erling Haaland launch his YouTube channel, which has grown to around 4.5 million subscribers, and worked with comedian Julian Shapiro-Barnum on sponsorships for his YouTube late-night project, Outside Tonight. The point is not simply that celebrities can become creators. It is that an agency can now help assemble the production, distribution and commercial systems that make a creator channel function like a media property.

The Platform Is The Talent Business

For creators, that support can reduce the need to build an entire production company before testing an idea. For WME, it creates a deeper role in the value chain. The agency can help shape the concept, manage the channel, distribute the content and sell the sponsorship around it.

That is also why this matters beyond one new WME division. As YouTube becomes a place where existing social content can be extended into a larger media system, creators and talent agencies are competing to control more of the relationship between audience, content and revenue.

The strategic consequence is clear: talent agencies are no longer just selling access to creators. They are building the operational infrastructure that lets creators own and scale their own channels.
