WhatsApp Gets Its Own Instagram Notes-Like “About” Status Update Feature

WhatsApp is borrowing a page from Instagram as it rolls out a new status update format that feels a lot like Instagram Notes, short, lightweight updates designed to spark quick connection.

Meta announced that WhatsApp’s “About” feature is being relaunched as a more visible, more dynamic way to share what you’re doing, how you’re feeling, or why you might not be available to chat. And while this may feel new, WhatsApp is quick to remind users that this was actually its original feature — long before end-to-end encrypted messaging made it the platform we know today.

Short, Temporary Updates at the Top of Chats

Just like Notes on Instagram, the new About status lets users post a short text update that appears:

  • At the top of one-on-one chats
  • Inside the profile view
  • As a tap-to-reply conversation starter

By default, About statuses disappear after 24 hours, but users can adjust the timer to make updates expire sooner, or stick around longer. Visibility controls also allow people to choose whether their About status is shown to contacts only or made more widely visible.

A Throwback With Modern Use Cases

The return of About doubles down on lightweight expression: a place to share context, moods, or quick thoughts without posting to Stories or sending a message. WhatsApp suggests using it to:

  • Share a life update
  • Signal availability
  • Start a conversation
  • Drop a small thought or feeling

For now, the feature supports only text, no music integrations or looping videos like Instagram Notes. But Meta hints that if adoption is strong, richer formats could arrive over time.
