Social podcast app Breaker has announced its acquisition by Twitter and its app’s closure on January 15.
It might sound like just another tech acquisition, but this is actually an interesting one. Just weeks after announcing Spaces – invite-only voice-based conversation rooms that allow creators better control of the conversation – Twitter has acquired Breaker, a social podcast app that lets you discover, listen to, and share podcasts with friends.

Following the acquisition, Breaker will be shutting down its app and helping Twitter “create new experiences” for its community. Breaker co-founder Erik Berlin says that he and his team are “truly passionate about audio communication” and “inspired by the ways Twitter is facilitating public conversations for people around the world.” We can’t wait to see what they create.
Breaker has built a name for itself over the last four years, offering a “best-in-class” podcast listening experience together with a social element that lets users like and comment on episodes. Soon, Breaker’s team will be helping Twitter build its voice offerings “beyond the scope of traditional podcasts.”
Breaker will be shutting down on Friday, January 15, allowing its team to focus on those next steps.
There are plenty of other options out there to listen to your podcasts, and if you’re hosting your podcast on Breaker, you can easily move to a different platform and transfer your subscriptions. You can find out more about how to do this here.
