Tumblr is one step closer to being a true social networking platform. Today, the company announced it will be rolling out instant messaging within the next few weeks, allowing users to engage in discussion from within the platform.

Starting today, if you’re one of the lucky ones – the rest of us will get it sometimes soon hopefully – you will see a new smiley icon in your Tumblr dashboard.
Tapping on this icon will give you access to threaded chat conversations on the platform.

The new feature will be available across Android, iOS and the Web. Of course, once you get access to it, you will only be able to chat with other users who also have access. Until everyone has it, that is.
