TikTok is leaning deeper into local discovery. The platform has officially launched a Nearby Feed, a dedicated way for users to explore what’s happening around them, from restaurants and events to hidden neighborhood gems.
The feature is now rolling out in the U.K., France, Italy, and Germany, with more regions likely to follow.
TikTok has been experimenting with localised content for years. The Nearby tab was first spotted in testing back in 2022 in parts of Southeast Asia. Now it’s making a broader comeback with a more refined purpose: to turn TikTok into a real-time guide to your surroundings.
“Nearby” Posts are surfaced based on:
- Your location
- The topic of the content
- When it was posted
Think local travel inspiration, food and drink, cultural hotspots, experiences, and small businesses. Creators’ public posts may now appear to people in the city or region where they filmed, posted, or tagged a location.
TikTok stresses that location sharing is optional and only available to users aged 18+. When enabled, the app may use your device’s GPS while in use to improve local recommendations. iOS users will also see an on-screen indicator whenever their location is accessed.
Content from users under 18, private accounts, or posts set to “Friends” or “Only You” won’t appear in the feed.
Change Your Location, Change Your Feed
Much like travel planning apps, TikTok will let users switch to a different location manually. Useful if you’re visiting a new city or scouting a destination before a trip.
TikTok says the Nearby Feed isn’t only about discovery, it’s also about impact.
According to the company, 46% of TikTok users in the UK have visited a shop, restaurant, or attraction after seeing it on the platform. The new feed aims to amplify that behaviour by giving small businesses, creators, and cultural institutions more visibility.
TikTok’s algorithm is already unmatched in personalisation, but the Nearby Feed adds another dimension: relevance rooted in place. You’ll find the tab right from the home screen, instead of saying “Nearby,” it will simply show the name of the location you’re currently in.
There is no timeline yet for a wider rollout, but if TikTok’s local push drives engagement as strongly as expected, more markets could be next.
