Threads Tops 400M Monthly Users

Two years after its debut as Meta’s answer to Twitter (now X), Threads has passed 400 million monthly active users, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced this week.

“What started as an idea to compete with Twitter has evolved into a meaningful platform for open perspectives,” Mosseri said, adding that the app has added 50 million MAUs in just the past quarter.

While X still leads with over 600 million MAUs, Threads is catching up fast on mobile.

According to Similarweb, Threads hit 115.1 million daily active users on iOS and Android in June, up 127.8% year-over-year, compared to X’s 132 million (down 15.2% in the same period). On the web, however, X remains far ahead, logging 145.8 million average daily visits globally, versus Threads’ 6.9 million.

Over the past year, Threads has rolled out a steady stream of updates, from DMs and fediverse integration to custom feeds and AI-powered features, fueling its rapid rise and keeping the rivalry with X very much alive.
