Meta continues to expand messaging features on its fast-growing social platform. Threads is taking another step toward becoming a full-fledged social app with the rollout of group chats, allowing users to message multiple friends in one shared conversation instead of sending individual DMs.
Users can now create a group chat directly from the Messages tab by starting a new message and adding up to 50 people who follow their Threads account. Just like on Instagram or Facebook Messenger, each group can have a custom name, perfect for organizing conversations by topic, event, or friend group.
The new feature is currently rolling out globally, except in the UK and Australia, where Meta says messaging features are still being finalized. According to Meta spokesperson Alec Booker, the company is working to bring the update to those regions “as quickly as possible.”
Meta also confirmed that future updates will add better inbox management tools and the ability to invite others via shareable links, making it easier to bring people into existing conversations.
The rollout comes as Threads expands its direct messaging features to the EU, introducing both one-to-one and group messaging “over the next few days.”
With group chats now part of the mix, Threads continues to blur the line between public conversation and private community, reinforcing Meta’s ambition to make the app a more complete and connected social space.
