Maybe, like me, you thought Facebook Stories were a total waste of time. Yet, surprise: half a billion people use them daily. And I can’t explain it.
I’m not one to shy away from the new features. In fact, anything new that lands in the world of social media, I always give it a try. Snapchat? Yes. Instagram Stories? One hundred times yes. Facebook Stories? Nope. Not a single time.
Yet, here we are. Defying all expectations, Facebook Stories are a success. Sure, 500 million daily users only equates to just under one third of Facebook DAUs. But still, that is some serious number. Facebook must be doing something right.
In fact, it is the first time that Facebook Stories count as many DAUs as similar formats on sister platforms Instagram and WhatsApp. Two apps were the Stories format is undoubtedly a better fit.
Mark Zuckerberg revealed the numbers today on his quarterly call with investors. Even if 2018 was arguably one of the worse PR year in its history, Facebook continues to grow and earn massive amounts of money. And now Stories have become yet another income channel for the company, as millions of advertisers have now used the Stories format to promote their products and services.
