Spotify Makes ‘Discover Weekly’ More About You

Spotify’s iconic Discover Weekly playlist is getting its first major upgrade in a decade and it’s all about giving listeners more say in what they discover next.

First launched in 2015, Discover Weekly quickly became a fan-favorite, dropping fresh, algorithmically-curated music recommendations into millions of ears every Monday. Since then, Spotify says the playlist has driven over 100 billion streams, with 77% of listens coming from emerging artists. But until now, listeners had no real way to steer the recommendations in a particular direction.

That’s changing. Starting this week, Spotify Premium subscribers will see new genre controls at the top of their Discover Weekly playlists. Feeling like expanding from 80s rock into K-pop? Tap to push your weekly mix toward the vibe you want. The goal: give users simple, transparent ways to influence the music their algorithms feed them.

It’s part of a bigger shift for Spotify, which has been testing more features to make its recommendation engines feel less like black boxes. In addition to genre filters, users can now view and manage upcoming recommendations in their queue and even snooze tracks they’re tired of, putting the listener back in the driver’s seat without losing the element of surprise.

To try it out, head to the “Made For You” hub in the Spotify app, open your Discover Weekly, and if your app is up to date, the new genre buttons should be waiting for you.
