Reddit Chat Rooms Are Back

Reddit is testing new Discord-like chat channels where you can hold real-time conversations with other users.

These Reddit chat rooms live within various subreddits, allowing users to swap between browsing through posts and chatting with other Redditors.

Reddit explains that chats “will be dedicated spaces, rather than a one-off post” as they allow users to jump into conversations that are embedded inside subreddits.

For the moment, the feature is only available on mobile and in select subreddits. The platform confirmed it is currently testing chats with 25 “small and medium-sized communities” that have less than 100,000 members but plans on expanding chats to other subreddits as time goes on.

Redditors will certainly remember that this is not the first time Reddit tried to integrate a chat feature into its platform.  Back in 2018, Reddit had rolled out a community chat room feature which was later rolled back as it failed to captivate users. Live chatting came back to the platform again in 2020 but the feature only lived one day due to a bug that caused the ‘Start Chatting’ icon to appear on every single subreddit.

Reddit has posted more details about this new chat rooms pilot on r/modnews, where it says mods will be able to flag and remove content from chats as well as determine which users can participate.
