Pinterest Now Lets You Search For Images Within Images

Pinterest is probably the best platform to discover new and interesting visual content, especially when it comes to fashion and/or home design. You can find thousands of amazing interior decoration ideas for example. However, it is usually difficult to find out more about each object (or piece of clothing) you see in a picture.

Until today that is. Because now, Pinterest is rolling out the upgraded version of its search tool that lets you click on objects within photos to discover similar objects pinned on the site.

This new visual search tool is no doubt a new attempt for Pinterest to appeal to advertisers looking to get more from the digital pin board. Pinterest has explained that it allows users to zoom in to any existing pin and then get results for visually similar pins.

Kevin Jing, an engineering manager at Pinterest, explained this in a blog post:
Sometimes you spot something you really love on Pinterest, but you don’t know how to find it in real life, or what it’s even called. There’s that perfect lamp hiding in a Pin of someone’s living room, or maybe a random street style shot with the exact shoes you’re looking for.
So now, when you spot something you like within a pinned image, tap on the search tool that will appear in the corner of the image. Then, all you have to do is select the part of the image you are interested in (it looks like a crop tool) and the visual search tool will bring up a bunch of visually similar pins that will help you find the specific object.

I truly believe this is a huge step forward for Pinterest. As a visual and online commerce-oriented platform, it is very important for Pinterest to help users find, identify, and purchase things directly from within the platform. And as such, Pinterest is the first platform to launch a proper visual search tool.
