Meta may have found a surprisingly simple answer to one of the biggest problems facing smart glasses: remove the camera.
The company is reportedly preparing a new pair of AI glasses, codenamed Luna, that keeps Meta AI, microphones and audio but eliminates photo and video capture entirely.
Meta could reveal the glasses as soon as Meta Connect next week, with an October release reportedly being targeted.
If accurate, Luna would be an interesting shift in Meta’s wearable strategy.
Smart Glasses Without The Camera
The reported Luna glasses would feature six microphones, allowing users to interact with Meta AI and the company’s Muse AI agent, along with speakers for music, calls and other audio.
Removing the camera also appears to have a physical benefit.
Without the imaging hardware, Meta has reportedly been able to make the arms of the glasses thinner, bringing them closer to the size and appearance of conventional eyewear. The company is said to be preparing two styles, Clubmaster and Burbank.
In other words, these would still very much be smart glasses. They just would not be cameras.
And that distinction could matter enormously.
Meta Has A Camera Problem
Meta’s existing smart glasses have proven that people are willing to wear AI on their faces. But the same design breakthrough that helped make the category work has also created its biggest cultural problem.
The glasses look normal.
That is great for the person wearing them. It is much more complicated for everyone around them.
Camera-equipped smart glasses have increasingly faced criticism over the ease with which people can record others without an obvious phone or camera being pointed in their direction.
Meta includes a front-facing capture LED designed to make recording visible, and says disabling or covering the light also disables the camera. But users have continued looking for ways around those safeguards.
The resulting tension is already moving beyond online debate.
Meta smart glasses have faced restrictions in spaces including courtrooms and pubs, while campaigns targeting the devices have turned privacy and consent into a much broader cultural conversation.

The technology is becoming normal faster than the etiquette around it.
Luna Could Be Meta’s Trust Product
That makes Luna strategically interesting.
Until now, the smart glasses race has largely been about adding capabilities. Better cameras. Better AI. Displays. Translation. Navigation. More context. More sensors. Luna would move in the opposite direction.
It would remove a major capability in order to make the product easier to accept. That is not necessarily a downgrade. For someone who wants open-ear audio, hands-free calling and constant access to an AI assistant, a camera may not be essential at all.
And for the people around them, its absence removes the most obvious source of uncertainty.
There is still a privacy question, of course. Six microphones embedded inside glasses that look increasingly ordinary will create their own concerns around listening and ambient AI.
But a microphone and a camera create very different social signals. People may worry that a device can hear them. They react differently when they think it can secretly film them.
The Future Of Smart Glasses May Need More Than One Kind Of Glasses
Meta is reportedly preparing Luna alongside another much more ambitious device.
The company is also expected to show new augmented reality glasses, codenamed Phoenix, capable of displaying things like virtual workspaces and movie screens, with a release reportedly planned for 2027.
That suggests Meta’s glasses strategy may be splitting into different lanes rather than converging on one ultimate device.
Some glasses will be cameras. Some will have displays. Some may be built around sport or accessibility.
And Luna could become the simplest version of the idea: AI and audio hidden inside something that otherwise behaves like ordinary eyewear.
That may actually be what mainstream adoption needs.
The smart glasses industry has spent years asking how much technology it can put on someone’s face.
Meta may finally be asking the opposite question. How much technology can it remove while keeping the product useful?
