If you’ve spotted random yellow squares popping up in comment sections lately, you’re not alone. No caption. No hashtag. Just a yellow square emoji.
The mystery? Courtesy of Knorr Philippines, which hijacked one of the least-used emojis on the keyboard and rebranded it as its iconic bouillon cube, all timed perfectly with World Emoji Day.

It started with cryptic comments dropped under posts from popular Filipino food creators like Naomi Peña, Sofia Maxine, and Chinita Foodie. At first, no one knew what it meant… until the penny (or the cube) dropped: the yellow square was Knorr’s cube, hiding in plain sight.
Knorr claimed the yellow square as its “signature emoji,” turning it into a secret handshake for food lovers. No copy, no logo, just a visual cue strong enough to spark curiosity. TikTok and Instagram speculation ran wild until the connection was revealed.
The campaign didn’t stop at visual disruption. Knorr launched the Emoji Recipe Challenge, translating Filipino favorites into emoji-only recipes. Playful, shareable, and universal, the yellow square became the flavor shorthand for an entire cuisine.
From Forgotten Emoji to Pop Culture Code
The beauty of the idea lies in its simplicity: take an unused detail and give it meaning. Now, this long-forgotten emoji functions as a cultural marker for Knorr, a brand asset that slips into comments, captions, and Stories like a wink between those in the know.
As Mark Matibag, Knorr Philippines brand manager, put it: “Even one of the least-used emojis can carry powerful meaning.”
Knorr didn’t just make a cube of bouillon go viral, it turned it into a piece of internet culture.
