Instagram Finally Lets You Edit Grid Thumbnails

Instagram is giving users more control over how their profiles look. The platform has started rolling out the ability to edit the thumbnail image that appears in the profile grid after a post is published. That means creators and brands can now adjust how their photos or videos appear on their profile without having to delete and repost the content.

The update is part of Instagram’s broader shift toward more customizable profile grids, which the company first teased in early 2025.

With the new feature, users can choose exactly which part of an image or video appears as the grid preview thumbnail. This allows creators to better frame visuals for their profile layout, highlight key moments, or maintain a more cohesive aesthetic.

The change also aligns with Instagram’s recent move toward larger, more vertical thumbnails that better reflect the full-screen experience of Reels and modern mobile viewing.

And Instagram isn’t stopping there. The platform is still working on additional profile tools, including the ability to rearrange posts within the grid, a feature creators have been asking for for years.

For everyday users, this may feel like a small tweak. But for brands, creators, and anyone treating their profile like a portfolio, it’s a meaningful upgrade. Being able to refine thumbnails means more control over first impressions, especially as profiles increasingly act as storefronts for creators, businesses, and personal brands.

Instagram profiles have quietly evolved into visual landing pages. The grid isn’t just an archive of posts anymore, it’s a curated identity. Giving creators more control over thumbnails (and eventually layout) signals a shift in how Instagram sees profiles: not as chronological feeds, but as designed spaces where presentation matters as much as the content itself.
